Wood & Wane.

A working record of Appalachian woodworking — the hardwoods, the chairs, the bench, and the slow business of cutting a board into something that lasts.

Why woodwork here.

Southern Appalachia is a furniture tradition in a forest that is still standing. The two are not separate.

Drive an hour in any direction from Boone and you will pass a sawyer, a chair-maker, a broom-maker, a woodcarver, and a man who sharpens everybody else's tools. The forest is full of the right trees: white oak and red oak, shagbark and pignut hickory, black walnut, wild cherry, white ash, sugar maple, and the occasional yellow-poplar that everyone calls poplar and nobody respects. The people who work this wood are not reenactors. They are fixing chairs, building cabinets, sharpening chisels, and selling what they make to the people who live next door.

On the term

Woodworking here is not a hobby. It is a trade, a side-trade, and a neighborhood. The chair you sit on at the restaurant, the dresser in your grandmother's bedroom, the porch post your great-grandfather wedged in 1923 — none of it came from a factory, and most of it came from someone you could have hired for a handshake and a case of beer. What follows is a working ledger: the woods, the chairs, the joinery, the finish, the sharpening, the schools, and the part of the trade that pays the bills when the weather turns.

On the region

The Southern Appalachians have always been a timber economy. The chestnuts came down in the 1930s; the oaks and poplars came down in the 1980s when the furniture mills moved offshore. The regrowth is now 40 years into its second rotation, and the stock of usable hardwood in the back of the region is, for the first time in a generation, large enough to support a small-scale craft revival. The wood, the weather, and the work are all on the same page.

An honest note on yellow-poplar: the wood is everywhere, the price is low, and the working properties are excellent. It is not a prestige wood and it dents easily, but for drawers, paint-grade casework, and the inside of a chest, it is the right choice. Do not let a furniture salesman talk you out of it.

Three traditional chairs.

The Windsor, the ladder-back, and the sack-back. Each is a different solution to the same problem: a chair that survives a wet porch and a heavy aunt.

The Windsor is not one design; it is a family of designs united by a single trick: the legs are sockets drilled into a thick, saddle-shaped plank seat, and the legs splay outward and backward to meet the back posts and the stretcher. The seat carries everything. The legs and the spindles carry almost nothing. When a Windsor breaks, it is almost always a single leg or a single spindle; the seat is rarely the failure.

Original Appalachian Windsors are comb-back (a row of turned spindles forming the back) or sack-back (a single curved plank for the back). The seat is traditionally poplar or pine for lightness; the legs are hickory or white oak for stiffness. The joinery is wedge-through-tenon: the leg is tapered, passed through a tapered socket, and wedged from the top. It is the strongest joint in the chair tradition and the most repairable.

The ladder-back — horizontal slats in a frame.

The ladder-back is the smaller, plainer, more Appalachian chair: two square posts, four rails, two stretchers, and a series of horizontal slats (usually three to five) that form the back. The slats are not decoration; they are the structural element that holds the whole chair from racking sideways. The slats are always hickory; the post is usually oak. They are steam-bent or pre-bent in the round as green wood.

The ladder-back is the chair that everyone in the region sat on for two hundred years. The original Shakers, the original camp meeting, the original country kitchen — ladder-backs. It is the chair you can repair with a hand-forged hatchet, a drawknife, and a Sunday afternoon.

The sack-back — bent hickory, all the way down.

The sack-back is the Smoky Mountain chair that is sold to tourists and made by people who could not have cared less. The back is a single bent hickory rod, bent in steam, with the hump sitting at the shoulder line. The seat is a hand-woven mat of split hickory bark, replaced every 20 years. The frame is all hickory, all round, and all riven from a bolt of wood rather than sawn.

There are still three or four men in the region who build the sack-back by hand. The cost is roughly what a decent used truck costs, and the lead time is roughly what a decent used truck takes to find. They are not rare because they are expensive; they are rare because the work is genuinely hard.

Hand tools vs. power.

Two different toolkits, two different philosophies. Most regional shops run both, and the line between them is moving.

Hand tool tradition

A full hand-tool kit for chair work fits in a wooden toolbox and can be carried down a holler. It is a different craft: the work is slower, the joints are tighter, the exercise is real, and the workshop does not need electricity. A hand-tool chair-maker in Burnsville can produce a Windsor a week and never plug in a tool. The hand-tool bench is the regional default for chairs, spoons, and the kind of work that pays the maker by the hour rather than by the piece.

Power tool tradition

The power-tool bench is a different workshop: a table saw, a planer, a drum sander, a router table, a bisquit jointer, and a dust collector that sounds like a turboprop. It is faster, more repeatable, and more consumptive of dust and electricity. It is the right bench for cabinets, built-ins, trim, and the bulk of the work that an actual handyman business produces. A two-person cabinet shop with a 3 HP table saw and a 20-inch planer can produce more casework in a month than a hand-tool shop can produce in a year.

Low-angle, dressed flat. Jointing, chamfers, end-grain cleanup.

Hock or Veritas if you can afford them. The bulk of the work.

Green woodworking.

Working the wood before it dries. The older tradition, the regional default for chairs, and the fastest way to make a Windsor.

Green woodworking is the practice of shaping wood that is freshly cut, still wet, and still flexible. Green wood splits cleanly along the grain, bends under steam, and holds a compression fit that kiln-dried wood cannot match. The cost is that the wood will move as it dries, and the maker must account for that movement in every joint. The benefit is that the maker can produce a chair in two days, with an axe, a drawknife, and a shaving horse, that would take a kiln-dried woodworker two weeks.

What it is good for

Chairs, spoons, rake handles, axe handles, ladder rungs, and anything that is shaped rather than assembled. Anything that depends on bent wood, riven wood, or the compression of a tapered joint. Anything that is going to be painted, waxed, or oiled without a film finish. The regional craft tradition is mostly green wood; the regional cabinet tradition is mostly dry wood; the boundary between them is the drying pile.

The shaving horse

The shaving horse is the green-wood bench. It is a foot-operated vise set on a heavy bench, designed to hold a workpiece at a comfortable height while the maker pulls a drawknife across it. A modern shaving horse is a four-hour build for a confident woodworker; the foot pedal geometry is the only ergonomic decision that matters in the green-wood shop.

Joinery basics.

Eight joints that cover 90% of the work. Learn them, and the rest are combinations.

Butt joint

Two square ends, glued and nailed. The cabinet default. Fast, weak, fine for paint-grade casework.

Rabbet joint

Shoulder cut along the edge of a board. The back of a cabinet, the bottom of a drawer.

J-03

Dado

Channel cut across the grain. A shelf in a bookcase, a drawer bottom in a carcass. Stronger than a butt joint by an order of magnitude.

Mortise & tenon

The structural joint. Chair frames, door frames, table bases, beds. Glue, drawbore, or wedged.

J-05

Dovetail

Interlocking fingers. The drawer default. Hand-cut for show; router-cut for production. Half-blind for visible drawers; through for boxes and chests.

J-06

Finger joint

Multiple short tenons. The box default. Glue surface is the only structural property; alignment is automatic.

J-07

Biscuit joint

Compressed beech splines. The trim default. Quick, alignment-only, requires a bisquit joiner. Not structural.

Wedged through-tenon

Tenon passes through the mortise and is spread with a wedge. The Windsor chair joint. Glue or no glue; tightens with age.

An honest rule: the more show the joint has, the less glue it needs. A wedged through-tenon is structural without glue. A dovetail is decorative without glue. A biscuit joint is decorative without glue and without strength — use it for alignment, not for load.

Finishing: shellac, wax, and oil.

The three finishes that cover 90% of the regional work. Know them, and the rest are combinations.

Shellac

Shellac is a resin dissolved in alcohol, secreted by the lac bug, harvested in India, and dissolved in denatured ethanol by the can. It is the traditional French-polish finish, the default sealer for furniture, and the most repairable finish in the trade. A shellac finish can be patched with a fresh coat of shellac; the lines disappear. The downside is that shellac is water-marked and alcohol-marked, and the finish dissolves if you spill bourbon on it. Use it for drawer interiors, casework backs, French-polished topcoats, and any surface that needs to be repaired without refinishing. A 1-pound cut is the default; a 2-pound cut is a sealer; a 3-pound cut is a build coat. Wax over it for a soft sheen.

Wax

Wax is a paste (carnauba, beeswax, paraffin) buffed onto a surface. It is the oldest finish, the most forgiving, and the easiest to repair. It is also the softest and the least protective. A wax finish will look beautiful on a dresser and will not survive a wet glass. For a working surface, wax over shellac, wax over oil, or wax over a cured film finish. Wax alone is a finishing-room choice, not a kitchen-table choice.

Oil

Boiled linseed oil, tung oil, walnut oil, mineral oil, and the modern blends (Waterlox, Tru-Oil, Osmo) are all penetrating finishes that cure inside the wood rather than on top of it. Oil is the easiest finish to apply and the easiest to repair. An oil finish is matte, soft, and food-safe when cured. A mineral oil finish is the default for cutting boards, spoons, and anything that touches food. Flood it on, wipe it off, wait 24 hours, repeat. Six coats is the working minimum. Sand lightly between coats with 0000 steel wool or 400 grit.

What to use when

The honest rule: a regional handyman business should own a quart of shellac, a tin of paste wax, a pint of boiled linseed oil, and a quart of mineral oil. That is the entire kit. Everything else is a varnish, a poly, or a product intended for a furniture showroom.

Sharpening.

A dull tool is a liability. The sharpening routine is the difference between a paid maker and a hobbyist.

  1. Start with a flat stone.

    A 1000-grit waterstone is the working foundation. Lap it on 220-grit sandpaper on plate glass whenever the stone dishes. A hollow stone will sharpen a chisel into a concave edge, and a concave edge will not cut.

  2. Establish the bevel.

    For a bench chisel, 25° is the working angle. For a paring chisel, 30°. For a plane iron, 30° to 35°. Hone the bevel on the 1000-grit stone until a uniform scratch pattern runs the full width of the face.

  3. Hone the back.

    The flat back of a chisel is the reference for the cut. Hone it on the 1000-grit stone until the scratch pattern is uniform and extends the full width of the back. This is the step that everyone skips; it is the step that determines the cut.

  4. Polish on the 4000 & 8000.

    Move to the 4000-grit, then the 8000-grit. The 4000 removes the 1000-grit scratch; the 8000 removes the 4000-grit scratch. The edge will be visibly polished; the cut will be visibly cleaner.

  5. Strop on leather.

    A leather strop charged with honing compound removes the wire edge and polishes the secondary bevel. Two passes on each face, ten seconds total. The chisel will shave hair from the back of your hand.

  6. Test the edge.

    Test on a piece of white pine or end-grain poplar. A sharp chisel pulls a continuous shaving; a dull chisel pushes. If the chisel is not shaving, go back to the 1000-grit stone. The 4000-grit stone will not fix a broken edge.

  7. Resharpen at the bench.

    Resharpen on the 4000-grit every 30 minutes of heavy work. The session-shave is the difference between a paid maker and a hobbyist. A dull chisel in a hand is a liability.

Spoon carving.

The smallest chair, the fastest chair, the most saleable chair. A regional tradition that travels in a backpack.

The green-wood spoon

A spoon carved from a freshly-cut branch of cherry, apple, or basswood is a one-evening project. Split a log, axe out a blank, hook-knife the bowl, sloyd-knife the handle, and let it cure for a week. A finished spoon is a small, useful, giftable object that demonstrates every green-woodworking skill in miniature: riving, drawknife, axe, hook knife, sloyd knife, and a food-safe finish.

Woods for spoons

Cherry is the default: dense, dark, food-safe, regional. Apple is the prized wood: harder, pinker, and wears to a polish after a year of use. Maple is the utility wood: pale, hard, and uniform. Walnut is the gift wood: dark, dense, and aromatic. Avoid pine, spruce, and poplar for eating spoons; the grain is too soft and the flavor is resinous.

Tools for spoons

The minimum kit is a hatchet, a sloyd knife, a hook knife (for the bowl), and a piece of leather for stropping. Total cost: about $80. The skill is the same one that built Windsor chair spindles in 1790.

The oldest continuing folk school in the Southeast. Week-long and weekend classes in chair-making, green woodworking, spoon carving, and Windsor chair. Residential enrollment; scholarships available. The school has produced a disproportionate share of the region's working craftspeople since 1925.

A 2-year craft school associated with Tennessee Tech. The only BFA-eligible residential woodworking program in the Southern Appalachians. The wood bins are deep; the studio is open until midnight. Originally the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School, founded in 1912. A heavily-built-out craft school with a serious woodturning studio, a furniture studio, and a full machine room. The 3–5 day workshops are more accessible than the BFA programs; the 2-week workshops are the same depth as a semester.

Woodworking for a handyman business.

The part of the craft that pays the bills. Cabinets, trim, and built-ins are the regional bread-and-butter.

Cabinets

A regional handyman builds face-frame cabinets in poplar, painted, with a plywood box and a solid-wood face. The technique is not complicated; the volume is. A typical kitchen is 18–25 linear feet of cabinetry and runs roughly $250–$400 per linear foot in the High Country, depending on the finish. Labor is 20%; materials are 40%; the rest is overhead, delivery, and finish. Build the boxes from pre-finished birch plywood, assemble with a bisquit jointer and a brad nailer, and face them with a poplar face frame and poplar doors. Lead time is 4–6 weeks for a typical kitchen. The profit is real.

Trim

Trim is the second pillar of the regional handyman trade. The regional default is a 3¼" colonial casing and a 4½" baseboard, both in poplar or primed MDF. The work is not deep, but it is consistent, and the labor is billable at the same rate as cabinet installation. A 1,800-square-foot house takes roughly a week of trim carpentry for a two-person crew. The trick on trim is the cope joint. Learn to cope inside corners with a coping saw; the joint will close tight when the house moves, and the alternative — a mitered inside corner — will open the first time the humidity changes. Outside corners are mitered; inside corners are coped.

Built-ins

Built-ins are the highest-margin work in the regional handyman trade. A floor-to-ceiling bookshelf in a hundred-year-old bungalow is paint-grade carpentry with a tight tolerance for the floor and ceiling that is not square. The materials are cheap (poplar, plywood, and a case of brad nails); the labor is medium; the bill is high. The regional default for a built-in is a face-frame plywood box with a poplar face and a poplar shelf, painted. Add a bench, a window seat, or a reading nook and the bill goes up by half. The honest margin on a built-in is 40–50% if the work is done in the shop and finished on site; 25% if the work is done in the customer's basement in plastic sheeting.

What to charge

The regional handyman rate in the High Country in 2026 is $55–$85/hour for a solo operator, $95–$140/hour for a two-person crew, and a markup of 1.4–1.8x on materials. The work pays the bills if the work is consistent; the work is consistent if the work is finished on time. The craftsmanship is the marketing.

Why this craft.

The chair in front of you is a working argument that the forest and the maker are still on speaking terms.

Woodworking is the oldest sustained craft in the Southern Appalachians, older than the pottery tradition at Seagrove,1 older than the chain-carve tradition of the post-war highways, and arguably older than the basket tradition that the Cherokee carried up the rivers. The wood was here; the people came; the chairs came with them. The furniture and the cabins it lived in were made of the same boards, with the same tools, by the same hands, in a self-reinforcing cycle that ran from the 1780s until the furniture mills moved offshore in the 1980s.2

The craft has never entirely stopped. What changed in the 1990s and 2000s was the kind of woodworker: the small commercial mill became a hobby shop became a one-person custom shop became, increasingly, a working studio with a website and a wait list. The Southern Highland Craft Guild, founded in 1930, has documented every generation of this transition through its Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway; the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, in continuous operation since 1925, has taught a hand-tool woodcraft curriculum to several thousand students since its founding.3

What follows in this essay is the why; the numbered sections above are the how. Together they are a working record of the regional craft as it stands in the summer of 2026: a hundred-year-old trade in the middle of a slow revival, taught at three schools, practiced in dozens of home shops, and still, on a Saturday morning in Burnsville, made by hand.

How it's done — a working primer.

Five stages from standing tree to finished chair. The same stages, in the same order, since the 1780s.

Stage one — harvest

The tree comes down in late winter, after the sap has dropped but before the first bud. The log is crosscut into bolts sized for the work — chair logs are 28 to 36 inches long, cabinet logs are 8 to 10 feet — and either used immediately (green woodworking) or stacked in Stickering rows for air-drying.4 Air-dry time is one year per inch of thickness; kiln-drying cuts this to weeks but stresses the wood.

Stage two — rough mill

A regional sawyer with a Wood-Mizer bandsaw mill converts the bolts to slabs and dimensional stock. A quarter-log of white oak yields four flat-sawn boards; a rift-sawn board requires the log to be quartered first. Most regional hardwood is sold flat-sawn, with the cathedral-grain figure on the face of the board.

Stage three — dimension and joint

The boards are jointed (one face flat, one edge square), planed to thickness, and cut to length with a handsaw or a table saw. The pieces are then cut to their joinery — mortise and tenon, dovetail, rabbet, dado — using a combination of hand tools and machines.

Stage four — assembly and glue-up

Dry-fit first, then disassemble, then glue with hide glue or a modern PVA. Clamp and check for square. The chair frame goes together before the seat; the cabinet carcass goes together before the doors. A regional default is yellow glue (Titebond III) for exterior work and hide glue for any repair.

Stage five — finish

Scraped or sanded to 220 grit, sealed with shellac, and finished with either wax (for drawer interiors and casework backs) or boiled linseed oil (for food-contact surfaces). Tung oil is the gift finish; mineral oil is the cutting-board finish.

The High Country connection.

Three schools, one guild, and the woodshop you can drive to.

The High Country woodworker's professional network runs through three institutions. The John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, founded in 1925 by Olive Dame Campbell and Marguerite Butler, is the oldest residential craft school in the Southeast and the single most important reason the woodworking tradition survived in the region.5 Its week-long chair-making, green woodworking, and Windsor classes have trained several generations of working makers; many of the eight studios profiled in this ledger are Folk School alumni.

The Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee, an affiliate of Tennessee Tech, runs the only BFA-eligible residential woodworking program in the Southern Appalachians. Founded in 1979, the school offers a two-year associate degree and a four-year BFA; the wood bins are deep, and the studio is open until midnight. Graduates include a quiet generation of working studio furniture makers, chair builders, and luthiers now practicing in Asheville, Knoxville, and the Boone area.

The Southern Highland Craft Guild, founded in 1930 and headquartered at the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 382, is the regional trade organization. The Guild's annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands, held in Asheville each October since 1948, is the largest juried craft show east of the Mississippi and the regional showcase for working woodworkers. The Guild maintains a working archive at the Folk Art Center's library, with several thousand slides and a thousand-piece permanent collection documenting the regional craft tradition since 1930.
